Health counsellors take a biopsychosocial approach to health. In other words, we understand health to be the product not only of the biological or physical processes (e.g., a virus, muscle injury) but also of psychological factors (thoughts and beliefs) (They are going to think I’m lazy if I don’t…), behavioural (eg., habits) (I know I need to eat better but…) and social processes (She expects me to…).
We believe that for real wellness we need to address the client holistically and look at all the influences in their lives. We treat the connection between the mind, body, environment and social influences. We do this by calming the nervous system and re-training the brain with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and education of symptom management skills.
